Brexit must wait

Whatever you think about Britain's future after Brexit, some things are crystal clear:
Already two years ago the government's own figures showed that without a trade deal with the EU Britain's growth would be 5% or more lower than if we had remained; and even with Johnson's 'oven ready' deal we would still be 2% worse off.
Either way, there is no possibility Britain can be better off in the foreseeable future.
Still, that's what England and Wales voted for, (though not Scotland or Northern Ireland) so we must accept the democratic decision.
But now we have a pandemic. So far Britain has dealt with it much less well than other big European countries - worse even than the US - measured by population.
In less than seven weeks we are going to pile onto this misery the not so short-term damage of Brexit.
This is madness
This week Johnson got rid of his most fanatical Leavers. He has a once-in-a-lifetime chance to stem the tide - immediately, without long-winded legislation, or dividing the United Kingdom into bitter sides again.
Only fanatics could object if he asks the EU to agree to prolong the transition for 12 months, to give the pandemic time to play itself out fully and all 28 governments and their regions time to concentrate on 'beating the virus' and starting to repair their fractured economies.
It's a no-brainer. Brexit must be paused.

Maybe with Cummings having packed his bag Boris will accept that a change in the handling of both Covid19 and Brexit is required. Maybe he would accept that his is a government of nonentities and bring in some of the brains from the Remain side of the party to handle some of the non-Brexit issues we face. How much will it depend on Carrie?. Boris has always been the front man who can only spread positive news, as Mayor of London he had (eventually) a strong team behind him, that is what he lacks now.
